multi-axis and robotic cutting systems

Our standard ultrasonic machine range is enhanced by incorporating the flexibility of multi-axis and robot systems. These can be programmed to cut products across a number of axes, and in the case of a 6-axis robot, allows complete flexibility.

A recent example of a robot cutting application can be found in the sandwich industry. An innovative cutting solution, using a sonotrode mounted on a robot arm, cuts sandwiches and wraps on a moving conveyor. Using a vision system mounted before the cutting station, the system is able to recognise the exact position of the sandwich on the conveyor – regardless of orientation – and communicates this information to the robot. This allows the sonotrode to be positioned in the exact diagonal position across the sandwich, and a perfect cut to be achieved – all without stopping the conveyor. The customer has eliminated costly ‘offcuts’ – where sandwiches are not cut perfectly and so cannot be packed for sale. In addition, because the sandwich does not have to be manually aligned to the correct position before cutting, by making use of the vision system, there are significant labour savings ; a totally automated cutting solution providing the customer with huge benefits.

Ultrasonic cutting involves high frequency sound waves being generated through a sonotrode oscillating at 20,000 times per second (20KHz). The sound waves are concentrated and evenly distributed along the leading edge of the sonotrode, thereby creating a very effective and unique cutting system. The amount of movement (amplitude) can be varied to suit the product, normally varying between 40 and 80 microns. The generator is housed in the rear control panel and provides the power to the titanium sonotrode via a stainless steel housed transducer and booster.
